Nichols’s Big Day Propels Browns River Diamondbacks Past South Burlington Expos

Nichols drove in five runs on two hits to lead Browns River Diamondbacks past South Burlington Expos 11-10 on Sunday at Veterans Memorial Park. Nichols hit a home run to center field in the fifth inning, scoring three runs, and singled in the seventh inning, scoring two.

Both offenses were strong at the plate as Browns River Diamondbacks collected 10 hits and South Burlington Expos eight in the high-scoring affair.

South Burlington Expos got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Terhune scored after tagging up, and Handy was struck by a pitch, each scoring one run.

Browns River Diamondbacks tied the game in the top of the second thanks to a play, and a double by Powell.

In the top of the third, Browns River Diamondbacks broke up the tie when Groff scored after tagging up. Then a single by Kohlasch followed to extend the lead to 4-2.

Four more Browns River Diamondbacks runs crossed the plate in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 8-2. Kohlasch doubled, scoring one run, and Nichols homered to center field, scoring three runs.

South Burlington Expos scored six runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Gorton doubled, scoring three runs, Hallet induced Whitmore to hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored, and Handy doubled, scoring two runs.

Browns River Diamondbacks took the lead in the top of the sixth. Jones singled, scoring one run, to give Browns River Diamondbacks the edge, 9-8.

Gorton grounded out, which helped South Burlington Expos tie the game at nine in the bottom of the sixth.

A single by Nichols gave Browns River Diamondbacks the lead, 11-9, in the top of the seventh.

Larose opened the game for Browns River Diamondbacks. The righty surrendered three hits and two runs over four innings, striking out five and walking two. Carey opened the game for South Burlington Expos. The starter surrendered eight hits and eight runs over five innings, striking out nine and walking four. Nichols and Hallet each appeared in relief for Browns River Diamondbacks.
