Strong Hitting Not Enough As Vermont Black Sox Falls To Champlain Mariners

Even though Vermont Black Sox collected eight hits to Champlain Mariners's seven, they still fell 10-7 on Sunday. Starr and Pattison each collected two hits for Vermont Black Sox.

Vermont Black Sox were the first to get on the board in the first when Callahan induced Dennis to hit into a fielder's choice, but one run scored.

A sacrifice fly by Blood extended the Vermont Black Sox lead to 2-0 in the top of the second inning.

Bushey doubled to center field, which helped Champlain Mariners tie the game at two in the bottom of the second.

Vermont Black Sox took the lead in the top of the fourth. Starr scored after tagging up, to give Vermont Black Sox the edge, 3-2.

Champlain Mariners flipped the game on its head in the bottom of the fifth, scoring eight runs on two hits to take the lead, 10-3. The biggest blow in the inning was a home run to center field by Mazza-Bergeron that drove in three.

Callahan earned the win for Champlain Mariners. The hurler gave up eight hits and seven runs (six earned) over five and one-third innings, striking out two and walking one. Dickerson took the loss for Vermont Black Sox. The right-handed pitcher went two-thirds of an inning, allowing eight runs (two earned) on one hit, striking out none and walking three. Hayes stepped on the mound first for Vermont Black Sox. The pitcher surrendered five hits and two runs over four innings, striking out four and walking two. Mikell earned the save.

Lauf and Dennis were tough to handle back-to-back in the lineup, as each drove in two runs for Vermont Black Sox. Vermont Black Sox turned one double play in the game.

Bushey and Mazza-Bergeron each drove in three runs for Champlain Mariners. Mikell went 2-for-4 at the plate to lead Champlain Mariners in hits.
